What 20 years of baby proofing has taught us
A badly placed gate can create a bigger danger than the one it solves. A few rules we follow on every job:
Keep top-of-stair gates back
A gate with a base rail should sit at least 40cm from the top step, so a caught heel doesn't send someone toward the drop.
Never pressure-mount on glass
Constant pressure stresses a glass balustrade, and an impact could shatter it. We use custom fixings instead.
Choose manual gates for stairs
Self-closing springs wear with daily use. Manual latching is the only failsafe way to know a gate is shut.
